Many Vernal area residents don’t realize that the Uintah Arts Council has been holding an annual juried art show/contest for a quarter century. In fact, it’s the only juried art contest in northeastern Utah and cash prizes are awarded, too!
Many art mediums are exhibited every year… including oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, pencil or charcoal drawings, carving and sculpture. The other main visual art that is not represented in this show is photography… that’s because we have a separate juried Photography Shootout for the shutterbugs.
“Juried”… means judged. We engage someone, usually from outside of our immediate area who is accomplished and experienced in the visual arts, to come spend a day and judge all of the artwork that is submitted for the contest. Artists pay a modest fee with each piece they enter and the money collected goes toward the prizes awarded.
For the most part, artwork is judged only against items in the same category. For example, watercolors only compete against watercolors; drawings are only judged against other drawings; sculptures are only compared to other sculptures, etc.. Ultimately, one piece of artwork is singled out for “Best of Show”, but then there are prize winners in each category, a 1st and 2nd prize for each.
Each year, a theme is announced. Artwork may be entered in the “theme” division, where the subject is specific to the announced theme… or can be entered into the “open” division where there is no specific subject. Prizes in the “theme” division are a little larger than in the “open” division.
The best part of all is that this contest and show are open to anyone. It’s not just for professionals… and it’s not just for amateurs. If you’ve never been to one of our shows… come see what goes on. See what kind of artwork gets entered. See what won the prizes. Get a feel for it and maybe you’ve got something that you would like to enter next year. It’s free. It’s fun!
